Executive Director's Welcome

The Benefits of Art Education

Education: it’s good for you … actually, it’s good for all of us.

Lifelong education is the best gift we can give ourselves. Intellectual challenge keeps our brains robust, protects against aging and readies students for new challenges.

Among children, students with high levels of arts participation outperform other students by virtually every measure. And when a child learns to love the classroom because he or she loves to make art, the art class opens a door to a lifelong habit of learning and excelling.

At the Brookline Arts Center, we believe that every person deserves the opportunity to experience art. In the long run, art education is central to educational opportunity. Your support allows the Brookline Arts Center to offer quality, affordable art education to adults, children and seniors.

In recent years, the Brookline Arts Center has reached more community members than ever before:

• Ten thousand people of all ages and backgrounds come to the Brookline Arts Center each year for quality affordable classes and educational programs

• The Brookline Arts Center received an extremely high score (“Outstanding”) for community service and outreach from the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s peer review panel, higher than many of the Commonwealth’s largest art organizations

• The Brookline Arts Center has been honored with a major Preservation Projects Fund grant from the Massachusetts Historical Commission and a Gold Star Award from the Massachusetts Cultural Council

• The Brookline Arts Center provides free exhibitions of local contemporary art for a broad public: exhibiting artists have included Pulitzer Prize winner, a Fulbright scholar and a Nobel Prize winner.

• The Brookline Arts Center provides free art classes for low-income children and seniors at the Brookline Housing Authority.

• In the unique Moms, Dads and Tots classes, parents and children develop together artistically and intellectually

• An extensive scholarship program provides $10,000 in full and partial scholarships to low-income students

Please consider sending a gift, however small, to the Brookline Arts Center: your support allows the arts center to continue our 45-year tradition of quality programming, community outreach, and prudent management.
