The Basics of Drawing
a specially designed class for our non-artists
Instructor: Sue Funk
Using careful observation and deconstruction of subjects, learn the fundamentals of drawing. Through shading, cross-hatching, and perspective, students will discover how to create the illusion of texture and dimension. Lessons include line drawing, sketching, and gesture drawing. Enjoy the basics of drawing in a relaxed and informal class that easily inspires new or returning artists.

Figure Drawing

This class is designed to invigorate your drawing. Through a detailed investigation of the human body, students will learn how to rebuild the body on paper. Start with gesture drawings and muscular studies; finish with articulated drawings of the figure. This class welcomes new and returning students to work in their favorite media.

Flora and Fauna
Instructor: Anne Steinman
Learn to realistically capture the natural color and texture of flowers and animals using pencil and watercolor techniques. Fine-tune your observation skills as you learn how to draw flowers, plants and animals with attention to detail and color accuracy. Explore light and shade, form, and color mixing. Focusing on textures such as fur, feathers and scales you will master the facial expressions, natural patterns and the unique characteristics of plants and animals. Numerous demonstrations and individual attention included. All abilities welcome. Limited to 10.

Intensive Oil Painting: Landscape Painting

Emphasis will be on observation and composition of landscapes. Students will look at how different light sources change the local color of objects. Three-value thumbnail sketches will be used to design the composition. Open to both beginners and those with experience.

Painting with Acrylics

No more flat acrylic paints! Join Peg Kane and learn the fantastic qualities and techniques of acrylic painting. As an ever-growing medium, acrylics allow artists to broaden their range of painting to incorporate new textures and surfaces. Learn how to use glazes, pastes, and layering to accomplish realistic and 3-dimensional artwork. Limited to 8.

Comics for Adults

Jewelry & Metalsmithing, all levels
Learn to make beautiful jewelry with an introduction to metalsmithing techniques. Your teacher will guide you to shape, polish, solder, pierce, etch and embellish jewelry in copper and brass. You can make earrings, bracelets, brooches, boxes and more. Teachers can also introduce hollow forms, stone setting, stone inlay, repousse and reticulation. Projects vary with experience level and teachers. Silver available for a small additional fee. Limited to 6.

Kinetic Sculpture: Making Mobiles
Instructor: Vladimir Barsukov
There is something magical about mobiles. Like living creatures, they move and have personalities; they can be humorous, meditative, or graceful. In this class we will take a look at works of some of the most famous kinetic artists such as Alexander Calder and George Rickey. Students will work with different types of wire and geometrical shapes of wood, plastic, metal sheets, etc. to create their own mobiles. We will explore ways to balance, assemble, and hang mobiles; students will be encouraged to create their own unique designs. Limited to 6.

Enameling
Open to ages 14+
Enameling is the process of fusing glass onto metal. Enamels are available in a rainbow of colors, used in jewelry and metal plaques. In this class students will learn the principles of metal preparation, enamel application and finishing processes. Beginners can expect to leave with finished pieces of jewelry or a small dishes. Intermediate and advanced students can use this as a chance to explore new techniques or continue working on projects of their own design. Limited to 6.

Batik

With its colorful, marbled effects, batik offers a variety of possibilities for decorating fabric. Batik is made with richly colored dyes and designs painted in wax. You can express your unique style in scarves and other clothing, pillows and household decorations, wall hangings, sculpture or greeting cards with this inspiring medium. Drop-in is optional for repeat students.

Express Yourself with Decoupage
Instructor: Jennifer Sherr
This class will focus on the basic techniques of decoupage and faux painting. Learn to transform objects into something to fit your style, creating fresh customized works of art that will reflect your own personality. Make lampshades, boxes, trays and other creative ideas. No prior experience is necessary. Students should bring their favorite pre-cut images to the first class.

Wheelthrowing
All Levels
Beginner classes focus on wheel throwing fundamentals. Intermediate and advanced classes allow students to expand their repertoire of forms. Demonstrations include plates, lids, handles, altered forms, and throwing off the hump. The class focuses on quality of design and execution. All levels will learn about glazes, underglazes, slips, and decorating techniques. Students are encouraged to explore their own interests and work at their own pace on individual projects. Calligraphy & Illumination

Long before computers and printed manuscripts scribes carefully hand-printed books. Today calligraphy is an art form and illumination is the decoration and story around letters. In this class, students will learn to use a calligraphy pen, create the alphabet and then illuminate letters with watercolor and art markers. All levels are welcome to participate.

From Memories to Art

Take your memories beyond photo albums and scrapbooks. Turn them into works of art! In this course students will learn to transfer their own images to a variety of surfaces including fabric, wood, paintings and tiles. We will then discover a world of surface embellishments including embroidery, collage with paper, collage with small objects, painting, drawing, and using text. The possibilities are endless, ranging from 2D to 3D, decorative to functional!
