Painting Portraits

The Basics of Drawing

Kinetic Sculpture: Making Mobiles


Instructor: Vladimir Barsukov

Many people love mobiles but do not know how to make them. In this unique class students will learn the secrets of balancing the parts of a mobile, and different tricks to assemble and hang them. We will use different geometrical shapes of wood, plastic, and metal sheets. Students will make at least two mobiles to take home, and will also be encouraged to create their own unique designs--graceful, humorous or meditative. Limited to 6.

Beginning Bookbinding

This course is for the beginning bookmaker. A new book binding technique will be taught each class. We will learn about papers and the proper way to handle them, as well as sewing and folding techniques. Students will end up with 6 completed books that are great for sketchbooks, scrapbooks or journals.

Color Relationships

Intensive Oil Painting

Come learn the joys of creating and making your own beaded jewelry! Learn how to use the proper tools and materials. Start and finish pieces such as necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Still Life Painting

The emphasis of this oil painting class is on understanding the effective processes that lead to achieving realistic still life paintings. Students will learn to set up interesting compositions, build color studies, block-in initial color relationships, and refine passages towards two finished paintings. Issues related to drawing and painting such as values, edges and paint handling will also be investigated at length. Individualized instruction will be given to each student at each stage of their work.

Innovating in Oil Paint

This class is a great way for artists to try different methods of creating imagery with oil paint. The class will work from life, photos, outdoors, abstract, monochrome, limited palette, texturally, and/or collaboratively. Each week artists will investigate various ways of approach painting, using traditional and non-traditional methods. Students will be introduced to different mediums and ways to apply paint. No previous knowledge of oil paint is required.

Batik

With its colorful, marbled effects, batik offers a variety of possibilities for decorating fabric. Batik is made with richly colored dyes and designs painted in wax. You can express your unique style in scarves and other clothing, pillows and other household decorations, wall hangings, sculpture or greeting cards with this inspiring medium.

Felting

Felting is a wonderful art form, it is easy to learn and results in beautifully layered fabrics. Learn Nuno and wet felting to create unique, functional products that are shaped and colored to reflect your unique aesthetic. Chinese Brush Painting

Have fun painting flowers, birds, animals, and/or landscapes using Chinese watercolor paints and ink on rice paper. Each stroke captures the essence of the plant or animal being portrayed. En Plein Air: Landscape Painting

This workshop will cover color theory, color mixing, atmospheric and linear perspective, and composition. We will explore texture and form the learn how to make believable shadows, reflections and volumes. Working outside on the grounds of the Brookline Arts Center, students will create two "plein air" paintings in oil over the course of this workshop.
