The Basics of Drawing

Using careful observation and deconstruction of subjects, learn the fundamentals of drawing. Students will learn shading, crosshatching, and perspective: lessons include line drawing, sketching, and gesture drawing. Kinetic Sculpture: Making Mobiles
Instructor: Vladimir Barsukov

Many people love mobiles but do not know how to make them. In this unique class students will learn the secrets of balancing the parts of a mobile, and different tricks to assemble and hang them. We will use different geometrical shapes of wood, plastic, and metal sheets. Students will make at least two mobiles to take home, and will also be encouraged to create their own unique designs--graceful, humorous or meditative. Limited to 6.

Beginning Bookbinding

Still Life Painting

The emphasis of this oil painting class is on understanding the effective processes that lead to achieving realistic still life paintings. Students will learn to set up interesting compositions, build color studies, block-in initial color relationships, and refine passages towards two finished paintings. Issues related to drawing and painting such as values, edges and paint handling will also be investigated at length. Individualized instruction will be given to each student at each stage of their work.

Innovating in Oil Paint

This class is a great way for artists to try different methods of creating imagery with oil paint. No previous knowledge of oil paint is required.

En Plein Air: Landscape Painting

This workshop will cover color theory, color mixing, atmospheric and linear perspective, and composition. We will explore texture and form the learn how to make believable shadows, reflections and volumes. Working outside on the grounds of the Brookline Arts Center, students will create two "plein air" paintings in oil over the course of this workshop.
