Portraiture Drawing

Instructor: Bob Collins

This class is a full investigation of portraiture. Learn to realistically convey the character of faces. Lessons include detailed instruction on how to draw anatomically correct head and facial forms, and the practice of taking accurate measurements of the head. As you draw facial features in detail you will build your skills in capturing your subject's character.

Figure Drawing

This class is designed to invigorate your drawing. Through a detailed investigation of the human body, students will learn how to rebuild the body on paper. Start with gesture drawings and muscular studies; finish with articulated drawings of the figure. The instructor welcomes new and returning students to work in their favorite media.

Drawing 101: The Basics

Instructor: Yaron Dotan

Using careful observation and deconstruction of subjects, learn the fundamentals of drawing. Through shading, cross-hatching, and perspective students will discover how to create the illusion of texture and dimension. Lessons include line drawing, sketching, and gesture drawing. Enjoy the basics of drawing in a relaxed and informal class that easily inspires new or returning artists.

Drawing in Ink

Watercolor & Drawing

Beginners and advanced students mix happily in this informal class. Novices learn from watching techniques in action, and veterans eavesdrop on the lessons given to newcomers. Students work from still life, photos, and prints; and each student works individually with the instructor. Students may bring their own projects. Botanical Drawing & Painting

Intensive Oil Painting

Students learn the basics of oil painting in a focused and supportive environment. Open to intermediate and experienced students. Focus will be on observation and composition of still lifes and landscapes. Students will look at how different light sources change the local color of objects. Three-value thumbnail sketches are used to design compositions.

Female Artists

This class will explore the role of women in art. Each week students will be introduced to an intriguing female artist that has contributed to the world of art. Class will begin with a discussion of the artist's life and work, followed by the construction of an artwork in the same genre and media as the featured artist. This spring will include Helen Frankenthaler and watercolors, Joan Mitchell and oil pastels, Kathe Kollwitz and graphite, among others. Limited to 12.

Jewelry & Metalsmithing, all levels

Learn to make beautiful jewelry with an introduction to metalsmithing techniques. Your teacher will guide you to shape, polish, solder, pierce, etch and embellish jewelry in copper and brass. You can make earrings, bracelets, brooches, boxes and more. Teachers can also introduce hollow forms, stone setting, stone inlay, repousse and reticulation. Kinetic Sculpture: Making Mobiles

Instructor: Vladimir Barsukov

There is something magical about mobiles. Like living creatures, they move and have personalities; they can be humorous, meditative, or graceful. In this class we will take a look at works of some of the most famous kinetic artists such as Alexander Calder and George Rickey. Students will work with different types of wire and geometrical shapes of wood, plastic, metal sheets, etc. to create their own mobiles. We will explore ways to balance, assemble, and hang mobiles, and students will be encouraged to create their own unique designs. Limited to 6.

Enameling

Open to ages 14+

Enameling is the process of fusing glass onto metal. Enamels are available in a rainbow of colors, as well as small glass "flower" chips and decal sheets. Suitable for beginners to advanced students. In this class, students learn the principles of metal preparation, enamel application and finishing processes. Returning students can explore new techniques, or continue working on projects of their own design. Students may enroll in one or more sections. Limited to 6.

Design you own patterns and create textile artworks through printing and painting on fabric. Using block printing, stenciling and fine brushwork, students will learn how to build-up patterns and layer imagery to create interesting patterns with visual depth. Using finished fabrics students will learn how to design functional or decorative artworks, such as pillows, quilts, purses or wall hangings. Lessons will also include the application of fine embellishments such as beadwork and embroidery.

Give new life and energy to your closet by recycling and redesigning clothing using additive, subtractive and experimental techniques. In this class students will reexamine the function and symbolism of clothing, encouraging fresh ideas and designs to emerge. Whether it's a bathrobe, tuxedo, or skirt, students will be excited by the challenge to reinvent their selection in a thoughtful and creative way. Batik

With its colorful, marbled effects, batik offers a variety of possibilities for decorating fabric. Batik is made with richly colored dyes and designs painted in wax. Express Yourself with Decoupage

This class will focus on the basic techniques of decoupage and faux painting. Learn to transform objects into something to fit your style, creating fresh customized works of art that will reflect your own personality. Make lampshades, boxes, trays and other creative ideas. No prior experience is necessary. Students should bring their favorite pre-cut images to the first class.

Beginner classes focus on wheel throwing fundamentals. Intermediate and advanced classes allow students to expand their repertoire of forms. Demonstrations include plates, lids, handles, altered forms, and throwing off the hump. The intermediate class focuses on quality of design and execution. All levels will learn about glazes, underglazes, slips, and decorating techniques. Students are encouraged to explore their own interests and work at their own pace on individual projects. Nuno Felting

Nuno felting is the process of adhering the finest merino fibers to silk gauze through a moisture and agitation technique. This is a wonderful new art form that is easy and results in beautifully layered fabrics. Students can make pieces that are either functional such as scarves, bags, and clothing, or artistic wall hangings. Limited to 8.

NEW! Sculpting with Paper

Learn how to transform flat papers into 3D sculptures. The course will cover a variety of methods to build light yet sturdy structures. Students will explore color, space and technique and develop their sculptural talents with this versatile material. Working with box-cutters, paper cutting knives and various types of paper students will design and build a sculpture that is sure to impress. This is a great class for beginners and intermediates.

Relief Printing

Instructor: Judith Ann Bell

Relief printing came into use about 5,200 years ago in the Near East, when the ancient Sumerians pressed carved stone seals into clay. Learn how to create images with a technique that allows you to print multiple copies. We will experiment with several quick techniques and then concentrate on linoleum block printing. Limited to 15.
