Robert Baart’s “Paintings and Drawings,” the autumn gallery exhibition at the Brookline Arts Center, will feature evocative, abstract landscapes with rich colors and calligraphic brushstrokes. Images of foliage, water, and sky are not explicit, but still unmistakably visible.

Through his oil and acrylic paints as well as pastels, Baart offers intimate snapshots of nature to the viewer. His neutral yet vibrant cool and warm tones are as striking as they are inviting. “Rather than simply record a particular image or location, I prefer to give my impressions of this space,” says Baart. “Literal depictions would, for me, leave out much of what I find mysterious and elusive about the natural world and my relationship to it.”

Robert Baart, a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, has been a member of the faculty there for 35 years. He has exhibited at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, the Soprafina Gallery, the St. Botolph Club in Boston, The Henry L. Stimson Center in Washington DC, the Newton Free Library, and the Bromfield Gallery. His work is also part of the collection at the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis and The DeCordova in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

"Paintings and Drawings” by Robert Baart will be at the Brookline Arts Center from September 21st until November 6th, 2009. There will be a free Opening Reception on October 2nd from 6:30-8:30 pm.

The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street, at the corner of St. Mary’s Street and is open Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The center is easily reached by public transportation and is wheelchair accessible.
