Conversation Pieces

[back to Exhibitions]

BAC Sculpture Garden Gala in Monmouth Park

Conversation Pieces includes sculptures from seven Massachusetts-based artists Jamie Burnes, Mark Favermann, Madeleine Lord, Kim Radochia, Marcella Anna Stasa, Nancy Webb and Jack Welch who have designed and constructed sculptures for "Conversation Pieces." James Burnes' sculpture of a horse acknowledges the Arts Center building's past as a firehouse, in the days when horses pulled fire wagons. Pieces like Jack Welch's lunch box and Madeleine Lord's sculpture of a man reading a newspaper on a bench, speak to the inviting atmosphere of the Arts Center's garden and of the adjacent Monmouth Park, both places where visitors are welcome to relax.

The garden is a temporary exhibition of contemporary outdoor sculpture, which has been enthusiastically received by the Brookline community and continues to encourage new visitors to the Monmouth neiborghood. "Conversation Pieces" received its name because of the high visibility it receives from both the Brookline Arts Center and Monmouth Park. Both inside the Brookline Arts Center and outdoors in Monmouth Park, the sculptures in the new garden will spark conversations.

"Conversation Pieces" is sponsored in part by the Fund for Arts and Culture, a joint project between the Brookline Community Foundation and the Brookline Commission for the Arts. Molly Paul, Executive Director of the Brookline Community Foundation, said, "The Art and Culture Fund Grant panel's hope is that this small grant will serve as seed money for Conversation Pieces, and will help grow support for the project as well as the Arts Center itself. The Brookline Arts Center is crucial to Brookline's cultural vitality."
