The Brookline Arts Center will open its 36th Annual Crafts Showcase with fine handmade crafts by artisans from Brookline and across the country.

This year, the Crafts Showcase Preview Reception and Trunk Show will welcome three major artists presenting a comprehensive collection of their new work. The artists invited to kick off this year’s fundraiser at the Brookline Arts Center are William and Steven Ladd of Steven & William, of Brooklyn, New York; Randall Darwall and Brian Murphy, of Eastham, Massachusetts; and Erica DeMarco of Wow! in Newton, Massachusetts. These artists will appear for one night only.

Wednesday, December 1, 2010, 6 to 9 p.m.

Randall Darwall and Brian Murphy are a creative team who combine innovative designs and custom colors in hand made silk: their designs were recently featured in a solo show at the Fuller Museum of Craft and they have been collected by the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery and the Museum of Art & Design in New York City, among others. Their work is currently featured in Boston Home Magazine, Ornament Magazine, and Craft Connoisseur.

Steven & William are brothers who started their design collaboration 10 years ago in New York. Their reputation has skyrocketed in the years since: they will soon be opening their first solo museum exhibition at the Contemporary Museum Honolulu in Hawaii. Their work was also featured in the Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial, at the ICA Boston in 2007.

Steven and William have begun a new series of chandeliers and lamps, which combine hand-woven beaded textiles with buckles and grosgrain belts from the defunct "Invisible Leash" factory in Brooklyn (now the Shop Art community art center.)

Erica DeMarco's W.O.W. is a custom boutique in Newton Highlands that carries accessories from small producers and individual artists that will complement women of all sizes, from extra small to 3X. DeMarco will present a new collection of exciting jewelry at the Crafts Showcase Preview Reception and Trunk Show.

In the world of fashion, a trunk show is an event where the designer presents a special collection of work -- including work never shown before -- to a select group of buyers. The name came from the early practice of actually arriving with a travel trunk full of work to show.

The Crafts Showcase runs through Sunday, December 19th and takes place at the Brookline Arts Center, located at 86 Monmouth Street, at the corner of St. Mary’s Street, Brookline.

The Crafts Showcase is open Thursdays from 12:00 noon to 8:00pm and Fridays through Sundays from 12:00 noon to 6:00pm.
