Multi-media artist Myrna Balk and photographer Andrea Rosenthal will explore issues of women’s freedom and its lack in the exhibition Freedom and Enslavement at the Brookline Arts Center, September 10 through October 28, 2011. There will be a free reception with the artists on Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The exhibition examines the two women’s collaborative process, by exhibiting the montage prints that were created collaboratively alongside the source works from each artist.

"This is a wonderful chance for visitors to see how these two artists are working together: they can experience the original pieces that were made separately, and then learn how Myrna and Andrea layered the images together to make a new work," according to Brookline Arts Center executive director Susan Navarre. "In their subjects, both artists combine personal experiences with larger political issues, giving added layers of meaning to the works."

The exhibition's theme rises from the artists' shared desire to create art that confronts societal problems and women's experience. Rosenthal's photos address issues of addiction and body image, through staged self-portraits. Balk’s sculptures and works on paper contain abstract symbols of constraint, abuse and anxiety.

The Brookline Arts Center exhibition is presented concurrently with an exhibition of artwork by Balk and Rosenthal at the Newbury College Art Gallery from September 15 to November 18, 2011.
