Blue: A new series of photographs by Sarah Gaw

[back to Exhibitions]

June 14 - July 23, 2010

There will be an opening reception on Saturday, June 19 from 5-7pm.

The exhibit Blue is on view in the gallery of the Brookline Arts Center from June 14 to July 23, 2010. This new and intriguing body of work by photographer Sarah Gaw explores the complexity that can be found in the streets of Boston, in our long-standing MBTA transit system. Gaw captures the rush and crowding that we often associate with the T, while also challenging us to see the strange and unique beauty that lives in this go-between environment.

"In exploring the dichotomy between the entrances to the T and the underground T, I seek to create a sense of calm," says Gaw. "As I photograph, the images I envision are hectic, but there is space to pause . . . A darkness anchors each image; a vast space of lightness is punctuated by lines that pull my eye through the frame, from corner to corner and back again. The rhythm is palpable."

A native of Oneida, New York now living in Jamaica Plain, Gaw is well known for her darkroom work as well as her skilled photographic printing. She is currently the assistant manager of the Mac digital printmaking lab at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, as well as a freelance printmaking and photography consultant.

The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.
