Brookline Arts Center Presents "Mad, Mad World"

[back to Exhibitions]

What do we know? How do we know it? Ask the bunny.

August 2 - September 2, 2010 Opening Reception: Friday, August 6, 6 - 8 p.m.

The Brookline Arts Center's upcoming gallery exhibition Mad, Mad World by Joe Kitsch features an art installation made specifically for the community arts center's park-facing window.

The art experience starts when visitors approach the gallery from Monmouth Park, looking in on a theatrical landscape of sorts. The view combines some of Kitsch's favorite motifs: magic hats, rabbits and the starry night, in an illusion that starts to break when the visitor enters the gallery to see behind the stage set.

There will be a free Opening Reception on Friday, August 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The reception is free and open to the public and will feature music by singer Vanessa Morris . Morris' unique style is a blend of influences that range from Billie Holiday and Betty Carter to Ornette Coleman and Joao Gilberto. She teaches piano and voice at the New England Conservatory.

The Opening Reception is sponsored by Chobee Hoy Real Estate Associates.

About Joe Kitsch's recurring rabbit motifs, New Scientist writer Amanda Gefter has observed, In Kitsch's work, the bunny has come to represent the illusory nature of existence and the central role of observership in the creation of reality... Kitsch cleverly pays with the notion of creation: the birth of the bunny, of reality.

Joe Kitsch has created fine art, illustrations and theatrical design throughout New England. He received his M.F.A in Studio Arts and his B.F.A. in Painting from the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, in West Hartford, Connecticut. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Taber Art Gallery in Holyoke, the John Bryan Gallery in Farmington, CT, and the Hartford Art School in West Hartford, CT.
