[back to list]

Painters, Jewelers, Printmakers, and Photographers Show their Work at the Brookline Arts Center during Open Studios: Community Arts Center Throws Open its Doors on May 2 & 3

During Brookline Open Studios weekend on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3, 2009, visitors to the Brookline Arts Center will have a chance to enjoy hundreds of new artworks by its faculty and students.

Nine Brookline Arts Center faculty will present exhibitions of new painting, drawing, photography, jewelry, metalwork and enamels on May 2 and 3 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the studios of the historic Brookline Arts Center. The exhibiting faculty artists include: Sue Funk, Sarah Gaw, Claudine Metrick, Leslie Shershow, Karenna Maraj, Sasja Lucas, Ruth Kates, Heather Wang and Veronica Shimanovskaya.

A number of Brookline Arts Center painting students will demonstrate watercolor painting techniques on Saturday morning, May 2 from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Examples of their finished paintings will also be on exhibit throughout the weekend.

The Brookline Arts Center photography gallery will present "Reflections of the City." This exhibition features complex, layered images of city streets and shop windows by Brighton artist Myrtle Figueiredo. Meanwhile, B.D. Colen's photography exhibition "Fluff: the Mayor of Monmouth Street" in the BAC Gallery looks at neighborhood life and community ties from a new perspective: that of a beloved cat ubiquitous in the arts center's residential neighborhood.

Also on view will be a special exhibition of Watercolors by the ArtReach students of Vanessa Irzyk: these students have met each week for many years at the Brookline Housing Authority and have exhibited widely throughout the town of Brookline.

For more information, visit the Brookline Arts Center web site at www.brooklineartscenter.com or call 617-566-5715. Maps for Brookline Open Studios can be picked up at the Brookline Arts Center. Forty-two artists' studios are participating in Open Studios weekend in Brookline.

The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street, Brookline, at St. Mary's Street. This property, which is listed in the State Register of Historic Places, has received a matching grant from the Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund through the Massachusetts Historical Commission, Secretary of the Commonwealth, William Francis Galvin, Chairman. It is one block from the MBTA green line and close to bus lines CT#2 and #47 from Cambridge and Roxbury.

The programs of the Brookline Arts Center are supported in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
