The Boston Guitar Project Performs at the Brookline Arts Center's Opening Reception for "Conversation Pieces"
(Brookline, MA – March 15, 2007) The Brookline Arts Center is excited to team up with the Boston Guitar Project, a local group dedicated to guitar outreach, at the opening reception for “Conversation Pieces,” the new sculpture garden at the Arts Center. The gala will take place on Saturday, May 5, from 7 to 10 pm at the Brookline Arts Center.
Boston-based classical guitarist Steve Lin, who has studied at the Yale School of Music and at the New England Conservatory, was inspired by his NEC mentor, guitar virtuoso Eliot Fisk, to start the Boston Guitar Project. Fisk has performed at locations where live classical music is rarely heard, such as at homes for the elderly and in prisons. Lin came up with the idea of forming a group with other guitarists from the NEC to perform music as a form of community service.
The second recipient, Margaret Langdell has been a teacher at BAC for the past seven years. She is a graduate of University of Massachusetts Amherst and the prestigious jewelry program at the North Bennet Street School in the North End. She has worked extensively in jewelry and glass blowing in addition to consulting with museums in both the US and the UK on enameling techniques. Her work has been published in specialty books and periodicals.
Since Lin began the group in 2005, some of the many good causes that the Boston Guitar Project has been involved in include its inaugural concert at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Roxbury to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina, and fundraisers for churches such as the United Parish of Brookline, and for the Boston Classical Guitar Society. The Boston Guitar Project also performs at Boston GuitarFest, a week of guitar performances, which takes place every June at the New England Conservatory.
On working with the Brookline Arts Center for Conversation Pieces, Lin said, “We are really thrilled about the BAC gala since many of us believe in finding ways to have the visual and performing arts collaborate.”
Conversation Pieces is a garden of contemporary sculptures created by Massachusetts-based artists that surrounds the perimeter of the Brookline Arts Center’s historic 19th century fire station building. It is yet another extension of the Arts Center’s effort to bring high-quality and affordable art programs to the community, in the form of exhibitions, classes, and many more art outreach events.
In addition to music from the Boston Guitar Project, the gala reception for “Conversation Pieces” will also feature a delicious tasting menu, fine wines, a silent auction, and special guests. Tickets to the opening are $75. To reserve tickets to the event, or for more information, please contact the Brookline Arts Center at 617-566-5715. The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street in Brookline, one block from the St. Mary's stop on the MBTA Green line.
