The Sticker Show: New Paintings by Karl Frey on View at the Brookline Arts Center in May

The Brookline Arts Center will exhibit new paintings in oil and gouache on adhesive vinyl by artist and talented faculty member Karl Frey. "The Sticker Show: New Paintings by Karl Frey" is part of the Brookline Arts Center ongoing program of exhibiting fine art and photography.

"The idea behind the sticker paintings is to take aesthetically over-designed objects that people don't usually consider as art, and turn them into both art objects and seemingly mass-produced consumer objects by making large series of meticulously hand-crafted stickers," explains Karl on his website www.karlfrey.net.

Each sticker is painted in gouache and oil onto treated, white, adhesive vinyl. Then each sticker is cut out and placed on acid free tracing vellum so that they can be easily removed and re-stuck as the collector sees fit. The clash of mass produced idiom with the high art language of painted representation creates an unforgettable energy in Frey's work.

Frey's paintings are on view from Wednesday, May 11, through Friday, June 3, 2005. An opening reception with the artist will take place on Friday, May 13, from 6-8 p.m.

The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street, Brookline. Gallery admission is free. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 617-566-5715 or visit www.brooklineartscenter.com. The programs of the Brookline Arts Center are sponsored in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Brookline Commission for the Arts, and the Brookline Community Fund.

About the BAC: The Brookline Arts Center began 40 years ago in the basement of a Brookline home and in 1968 moved to its present home, a former firehouse, at 86 Monmouth Street. The BAC was recently presented with a Brookline Preservation Award for their use and upkeep of the historic Victorian firehouse. The Brookline Arts Center also provides free art classes for low-income populations through scholarships and the ARTreach program, in which free art classes are offered at Brookline Housing Authority buildings.
