BROOKLINE ARTS CENTER RECEIVES MASSACHUSETTS CULTURAL COUNCIL GRANT

(Brookline, MA-- October 10, 2007) The Brookline Arts Center was awarded an unexpectedly large grant by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, last week. The $8,700 grant is part of the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Organizational Support program, which provides four million dollars in unrestricted operating funds to organizations across the Commonwealth.

“We were thrilled to learn of this generous Massachusetts Cultural Council grant,” said Lenore Sempert, President of the Brookline Arts Center. “It was more than we expected and we’re very pleased that the grant is for operating support, a challenging funding category. The three-year commitment by the MCC will enable us to undertake exciting long-range planning for the Arts Center.”

The Brookline Arts Center, located on Monmouth Street, is a visual arts school offering classes to students of all ages. Classes are varied and range from drawing, pottery and batik to photography, oil painting, jewelry making, watercolor and much more. Founded by volunteers and professional artists in 1964, the Brookline Arts Center also offers frequently changing exhibits, lectures, discussion salons and other events in addition to its classes.

The Massachusetts Cultural Council grant process was very competitive: a peer review panel praised the programs of the Brookline Arts Center as “powerful, solid and impressive.”

"We are pleased to support the important work of the Brookline Arts Center with this grant," said Anita Walker, MCC's Executive Director. "The Arts Center is a vital resource for learning and enrichment for the residents of Brookline and beyond. The outstanding panel review reflects the quality of its programming and its efforts to reach all segments of Brookline's diverse community."

This grant will enable the Brookline Arts Center to further expand its programs and increase the availability of art to all those interested. Through its ARTreach program, the BAC has provided community service with free classes to children and senior citizens at the Brookline Housing Authority for over 20 years.
