The Brookline Arts Center Recruits Artists
for New Sculpture Garden Conversation Pieces

The Brookline Arts Center seeks Massachusetts-based artists to participate in a sculpture loan program for its new sculpture garden, "Conversation Pieces". "Conversation Pieces" will surround the perimeter of the Brookline Arts Center's historic 19th century fire station building. The garden will be visible from both the Arts Center and the adjacent and recently refurbished Monmouth Park.

"Conversation Pieces" received its name because of the high visibility it will receive from the Brookline Arts Center and Monmouth Park. The Brookline Arts Center will tie in the sculptures on view with its educational programming. At Brookline Open Studios in April 2007, the Arts Center plans to organize an indoor gallery exhibition of artist sketches, models and small objects to complement the outdoor sculptures. With its benches and low, stone walls, Monmouth Park is an ideal spot for sitting and chatting with friends and neighbors. Both inside the Brookline Arts Center and outdoors in Monmouth Park, the sculptures in the new garden will spark conversations.

The chosen sculptures will be on exhibit on a rotating schedule lasting a minimum of three months to several years, depending on availability and feasibility. To be true to their name, sculptures that are part of "Conversation Pieces" will be inviting and inspire conversation. Since the Brookline Arts Center and Monmouth Park both draw in many children, selected sculptures will also be child-friendly.

"Conversation Pieces" is sponsored in part by the Fund for Arts and Culture, a joint project between the Brookline Community Foundation and the Brookline Commission for the Arts. Molly Paul, Executive Director of the Brookline Community Foundation, said, "The Art and Culture Fund Grant panel's hope is that this small grant will serve as seed money for Conversation Pieces, and will help grow support for the project as well as the Arts Center itself. The Brookline Arts Center is crucial to Brookline's cultural vitality."

Founded in 1964, the Brookline Arts Center offers art exhibitions and classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, pottery and jewelry for adults and children. Through its gallery exhibition opportunities, its teaching positions, and its annual Crafts Showcase, which presents for sale the work of craftspeople across the country, the Brookline Arts Center is committed to supporting working professional artists, in addition to inspiring students to love and create art. The programs of the Brookline Arts Center are supported in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
