Brookline Painter Manika Srivastav Opens Creating Paradise at Brookline Arts Center

From February 1 through 29, 2006, Brookline-based painter Manika Srivastav will present Creating Paradise, a series of new work, at the Brookline Arts Center Gallery. There will be a free opening reception with the artist on Friday, February 3, from 6 to 8 p.m.

In addition to being an artist, Srivastav is a physicist, and a mother of three. She has studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and in Delhi, India. Her work has been exhibited in India, Egypt, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States.

In this most recent series, she explores the concept of creating a perfect picture in which reality edges in, almost unconsciously. These paintings balance image and abstraction, and old and new concepts of paradise.

Commenting on Srivastav's artwork, BAC Executive Director Susan Navarre says, "In her paintings, Srivastav reflects on her own experience and life, as representative of women everywhere. Her color palette is always gorgeous, and is progressing in a new direction right now: toward a new color scheme of slightly more moody pastels. I am very excited to see where this new series of work takes her."

A free panel discussion featuring the artist, with artist Clara Wainwright and video filmmaker Ann Carol Grossman (Keep 'Em Flying, Heading for Shore), will be presented on Sunday, February 19, at 3:00 p.m. in conjunction with this exhibition. For more information, call 617-566-5715 or www.brooklineartscenter.com.

Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Admission is free. The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street in Brookline.

About the BAC: The non-profit Brookline Arts Center began 40 years ago in the basement of a Brookline home and in 1968 moved to its present home, a former firehouse. The Gallery was opened in 2002, and presents exhibitions and educational events each month. It is handicapped accessible. The programs of the Brookline Arts Center are sponsored in part by the Brookline Commission for the Arts and the Brookline Community Foundation. The Brookline Arts Center is funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
