  • Brookline Arts Center 86 Monmouth Street Brookline, MA, 02446 United States (map)

Join us for the Opening Reception and Artist Panel of the captivating exhibition "Material Lineage" at the Annex Gallery.

Date: Saturday, November 11 Time: 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM

"Material Lineage" brings together the unique perspectives of Sonja Czekalski, Eileen de Rosas, Leslie Goldman, and Jillian Vaccaro as they explore the profound connections between matriarchal ancestry, the natural world, and the fleeting human experience.

In this contemporary, interconnected showcase, these talented artists employ a diverse array of materials, from handmade paper to human hair, and fabrics passed down through generations to digital media. Their work delves into themes of matriarchal heritage, the traces of memory, the impermanence of human existence, and the very physicality of walking.

This exhibition uses materials as metaphors, invoking memories and establishing links between human consciousness and the environment. "Material Lineage" creates a space for empathy, bridging the sixth sense of being, knowing, and enduring across time, land, and generations.

Don't miss this thought-provoking display that reclaims the unnoticed and inspires contemplation on family, feminism, human existence, climate change, and the intricate interdependence of all life. Join us for the Opening Reception to explore these compelling narratives and engage in a dynamic conversation with the artists themselves.

Let's celebrate the beauty of material lineage and the enduring stories it tells. We can't wait to see you there!

Exhibiton Statement Sonja Czekalski, Eileen de Rosas, Leslie Goldman, and Jillian Vaccaro present Material Lineage, an exhibition examining the material roots between matriarchal ancestry, mother nature, and the ephemeral human experience. Each artist approaches materiality from a diverse yet related perspective in contemporary connected practice. Themes of matriarchal ancestry, mother nature, traces of memory, the ephemerality of human experience, and the physicality of walking appear both individually and collectively. The exhibiting artists use metaphors within their materials to evoke memories and derive connections between human consciousness and the environment. With diverse materials such as handmade paper, human hair, fabrics passed down from generations, used consumer goods, and digital media, Material Lineage looks to employ materials to create a physical manifestation of visceral experience. Material Lineage creates an empathetic space connecting the sixth sense of being, knowing, and enduring across time, land, and generations. The exhibition reclaims the overlooked and provokes questions about family, feminism, human existence, climate change, and the interconnection of all living things.
