Nurture your child’s creativity this summer with art classes at Brookline Arts Center, where kids aged 5-12 can explore their imagination in an engaging, inclusive, and vibrant space!

Week 1: June 24 - June 28, 2024

  • Build It Up!

    Description Kids will have the opportunity to delve into the world of texture and sculpture with a whole week focused entirely on 3D art. We will discover different kinds of sculpture, and use a wide range of materials to create original artworks that stand up and stand out!

  • Mini Modern Art Masters

    Ages 8-12

    Description This week, we will cover artists from the pop art movement, cubism, expressionism, and impressionism. Learn from the artists who created the movements! Each day will be inspired by a modern artist who paved the way for contemporary artists today. Examples include Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Piet Mondrain, Keith Haring, and Yayoi Kusama. Students will leave with a portfolio of art inspired by some of these modern artists.

  • Art History pARTy!

    Description Thinking outside of the box is what artists do best. In this class, we will learn about artists who thought beyond the canvas and looked outside their normal environment for inspiration. Projects will include painting and drawing on the most unconventional materials. We will learn about murals, and sculptures and create some unique interdisciplinary art of our own.

  • Print and Mark Making

    Ages 8-12

    Description Enjoy the art of printmaking! This class is open to all levels. This week, long class students will learn the art of printmaking through the use of speedy cut stamps, the art of Suminagashi Japanese marbling and the art of print from found objects. Through the use of repetition and pattern making, students will learn a wide array of printmaking techniques and will explore how to make work in multiples.

  • Storybook Characters Come to Life

    Description This week students will enjoy creative modes of expression from their favorite childhood books. With the help of children’s literary experts, we will dive into the world of storytelling by making the characters we enjoy reading about! At the end of the week, your child will have developed a wide array of characters from their favorite books.

  • Facing the World Head On

    Description Have you ever been to the zoo and wished you could see dragons and unicorns instead of just lions and tigers? Join us for an imagination intensive, reading about and recreating our favorite fantasy beasts in a variety of creative mediums. Take a walk through your imagination as we paint, draw and sculpt both real and imaginary fantastical characters and creatures.

    Description In this class, lessons blend fun and learning through a balance of structured projects that encourage creative expressing, and visual challenges that encourage problem-solving, invention, and play. Students will be inspired by heroes, both real and fantastical, as they come to life through drawing, sculpture, and puppets in this lively vacation program!

  • Making Comics Workshop

    Description All about comics and cartooning! Through prompts and projects, students will split their time between learning essential comics skills like facial expressions, poses, and storyboarding and coming up with and executing their own original comics stories.

  • Wonders of the Reef

    Description Dive deep as we explore crazy creatures, corals, and chasms on the ocean floors! From schools of fish to coral reefs to the monstrous giants of the sea, let’s explore the colors, textures, and shapes that make up the underwater worlds that share our planet! Projects will include watercolor, mixed-media collages, 3D sculptures, and more!

    Description This week we will feature the real and the made-up creatures we love. Whether cuddly, crawly, cute, or wild, we’ll cartoon them, paint them, color pencil them. We’ll take the process from beginning to end: building characters, crafting expressions and poses, selecting shots, inking and coloring, and generally bringing our stories to life. With a combination of projects, games, silly warmups, and practice exercises, this class aims to help young artists find their comics voices–and use them.

The class is designed to be multidisciplinary, combining elements of art, history, natural science, and social science.   • Mini Microworlds

    Description Zoom into art this week as we explore whole new worlds within our environment. We will create miniature art as well as magnify the microscopic world around us in abstract paintings, sculpture, drawings and mixed media.

  • Early Exploration in Digital Photography

    Ages 8-12

    Description Take your love of digital photography to the next level! Students will learn basic introductory camera techniques and what makes a good photograph. This class will bring out students' potential of what they can create! This week will cover portraiture, still life, mixed media, and abstract photography. Each day, the teacher will introduce a new photographer for the students to study and learn from. At the end of the week, students will have a portfolio of images they can be proud of. On the last day of class, each student will be invited to print their favorite photographs to exhibit in a mini gallery show with their classmates.

    All levels are welcome. Students will need either a DSLR, point-and-shoot, or smartphone camera for the class. If you need a camera, please email office@brooklineartscenter.com and we will try to accommodate your request.

    Description Kinetic artwork makes creativity the way to play in this weeklong program. Art will move, spin, sway, and turn. Watch us make our own mobiles and pinwheels, bring our illustrations to life, and design colorful puppets to dazzle and amaze!

  • Myths & Legends

    Description Space... the final frontier! Art and science come together in this week of intergalactic adventures. Create while we learn about our universe's twinkling stars and immense planets. Projects will include collagraph print space ships, painting watercolor galaxies, creating our solar system, and more!

  • Going Green

    Description Students will engage with the natural world, and consider how our materials impact our natural environment. We will look at environmental art activists, and make our own works to explore and defend our relationship to our larger environment.
