Community Spotlight: Emily Sullivan

Emily Sullivan’s (she/her) dual-careers as a yoga teacher and a massage therapist began with her ballet training. While Emily was growing up on Cape Cod, her ballet teacher taught her how to express herself through movement.

How did you arrive at the BAC?

I found the BAC thanks to my daughter who asked for art classes. She attended the MLK day program and told me to sign her up for the whole summer camp upon pick up!

Tell us about your background and interests related to the BAC?

My background is in classical ballet-that really defined my youth and served as my gateway into appreciating the visual arts. It led to my career as a yoga instructor and massage therapist. I guess you could call movement my medium! I think it is serendipitous that the BAC is a stone’s throw from Down Under Yoga in Brookline where I work: two creative spaces in our community that should collaborate!

What other passions do you bring to the BAC community?

I am passionate about teaching yoga and mindfulness to kids and families. I love including art in my lessons and want to explore how bringing arts and yoga education together can help kids live happier, healthier lives.

What has brought you the most joy as a mom and yoga instructor?

I think I speak for a lot of parents whose youngsters’ early education was remote when I say it’s been a joy to watch my child go to school! It is especially sweet to see her make friends on her own and develop her school personality in light of those things being put on hold. Similarly it has been wonderful to hold space for a community of yogis through Zoom and back again!

What would you tell someone who is considering getting involved with the BAC?

Do it! Check out all the offerings and know you can visit and view art or take a weekly class.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?

  • I have wanted to visit Thailand for ages. I have offered Thai Yoga Massage in my practice for over a decade and would love to receive β€œreal” Thai bodywork. My daughter and I cook (and eat) a lot and are always on the hunt for new dishes we’ve never tried-I hear it’s a foodie destination.

  • I am going to learn to use a pottery wheel!

  • Try Aerial Yoga.

8) When you’re not at the BAC where can people find you? (drop your contact info, website, and/or social media!)

  • Down Under School of Yoga (as a student and a teacher) www.downunderyoga.com

  • On Instagram @eksullivan33

  • My website: www.massmettamassage.com
