Community Spotlight: Savy Berman-Gillis

Born in Boston, raised all over the state only to come back to the Hub after college, Savy (they/them) has worked all over the city in multiple fields until finally settling in niche adult education. They are committed to making difficult topics approachable, fun and safe through a compassionate, inclusive lens.

How did you arrive at the Brookline Arts Center? What sparks your interest in our organization?

I benefited from BAC programs as a kid growing up in the Allston/Brighton area. The BAC provides access to programs for low income families which was a huge help to my parents. It allowed me to take part in some wonderful art programs.

Tell us about your background and current role, and how it relates to the BAC?

I am the Community and Customer Engagement Manager at Sanctuary in Brookline. We share space with the BAC Beacon Street Gallery which has created a wonderful, collaborative relationship!

What other passions do you bring to the BAC community?

I am most passionate about bringing all the communities I am a part of together by throwing parties and events. The BAC and I have already seen some amazing events happen at the Beacon Street Gallery!

When you think about the arts, what brings you the most joy?

The flexibility of art is the most joyful aspect to me. It changes and grows with us as a society while also causing the growth and change.

If you had to use only one art medium to use forever, which would you choose? (clay, paint, pencil, metals, camera, printmaking, etc.)

Don’t make me choose! But if I had to, installation art would be my forever medium. I love making art and seeing art  in unexpected places in unexpected ways.

What is β€œart” to you?

Art is a multiform experience that can inspire, connect or even create controversy and it is a wonderful form of human expression and experience.

What are three things that you would want the BAC community to know about you that you haven’t already mentioned?

  • I am a queer, trans non-binary, multiracial person who believes in mutual aid, community building and that a good taco and margarita can fix almost anything.

  •  I love classic detective films, the Thin Man series is my absolute favorite.

  • Gardening, baking and crafting are what I enjoy doing in my spare time.
