Community Spotlight: Jocelyn Solis
1) How did you arrive at the Brookline Arts Center? What sparks your interest in our organization?
I was contacted by Jes as a follow up after one of my undergrad MassArt professors recommended me. I am interested in being part of a community that values culture inclusion with a clear mission and honesty.
2) Tell us about your background. How did you become interested in jewelry?
My mother once attempted to complete a jewelry course a while back when I was residing in Honduras. She left a bunch of untouched materials such as fresh river pearls and other beads. I once packed them all up and brought them to the states with me. Eventually I started making bead jewelry then that curiosity turned into a career choice for me.
3) What passions do you bring to the BAC community?
I am dedicated to teaching, it’s one of my true passions! I am driven by authenticity and experimentation, so I love to encourage others to explore those areas that can potentially be a game changer in someone’s art practice.
4) What has brought you the most joy in your profession?
Approaching my art practice slowly but steadily, being honest with my making process and arriving at concepts and ideas that really define my craft, it has taught me what is important to me as an artist and also why I do the things I do in my career as a jewelry maker and educator.
5) What was your favorite childhood art project?
Going to painting classes in the afternoon and being able to play while painting a surface and getting dirty without 0 worries in the world!
6) What artists or kinds of art are you into right now?
I’m very much into photography that captures highly sensitive details of flowers, Emma Larson who is a watercolor painter and a jewelry designer named Hermann Junger.
7) What are three things that you would want the BAC community to know about you?
I like to be flexible in terms of teaching and in the art making process, I like to respect and honor every individual’s abilities of doing things in inspiring ways. As an educator I like to meet my students where they are at in their learning journey and have them join the process so that they always feel included. I consider myself a very humble and friendly person, I like to treat others the way that I would like to be treated, respectful and fun environments are highly important to me!
