How did you arrive at the Brookline Arts Center? What sparks your interest in our organization?

One of my professors at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University emailed our class and told us the BAC was looking to hire teachers. I applied and I got the job! The BAC is so much fun to be a part of! I love meeting all the teachers and seeing what great projects they are having the kids work on.

Tell us about your background. How did you become interested in photography & printmaking?

I have a degree from Colgate University in Art & Art History. My senior thesis “In the Spare Room,” was a series of photographic digital prints. My primary medium at Colgate was photography but I also really enjoyed printmaking. Both mediums work well together and there is so much flexibility with printmaking. I love mixing mediums and experimenting. I am currently a first year MFA student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.

What other passions do you bring to the BAC community?

I have a huge passion for teaching. Seeing a student struggle with something at first and then watching them finally get it or have a breakthrough is one of the best parts of my job. It’s always so amazing to watch how creative our students at the BAC are.

What was your favorite childhood art project?

There isn’t a specific project I can point to, but I had this great Canon digital handheld camera (that I still have). This camera took amazing pictures and I used to love printing my photos out at Target or CVS. This is why I always encourage my photo students to print out their photos. There is something about holding your images rather than solely staring at them on a computer screen.

What artists or kinds of art are you into right now?

Laurie Simmons is my favorite photographer and has been since I was a freshman at college. I also love the work of Sophie Calle, Catherine Opie, Cindy Sherman and Carrie Mae Weems. I’m currently viewing Raina Matar’s work. Specifically her window series of portraits she did during COVID.

What are three things that you would want the BAC community to know about you?

I used to play lacrosse in college but now I stick strictly to runs along the Charles River. You can always find me reading or listening to an audiobook. And I collect Polaroid and old film cameras. Mostly my grandfather collects them for me but they eventually turn up in my apartment!
